Janine Antoni Art21 Response

I found the video of Janine Antoni's artwork truly inspirational. She takes her art to the next level by physically using herself as a part of each work. The most paramount artwork is more then the aesthetics; its the creative process put into each piece of art, and the background story that uniquely embodies the artist. Antoni demonstrates the deeper meaning in everything that is shown in the video, as well as relating them all to each other. One artwork gives her inspiration for the next creating a beautiful sequence. I especially loved her soap and chocolate carvings. I didn't know soap was made from lard, which was an interesting/ somewhat gross fact. After attaining that I thought it brought a whole new level to the sculptures. Antoni said she wanted to display "cleaning the body with the body", which she did in such a beautiful and creative way. She then took the idea even further by eating the chocolate and washing herself with the soap, this connected the sculptures to everyday life. Throughout the project she shows a unique process that is easy for the viewer to follow with no knowledge and even more thought provoking once her explanation is known.
